The talk focuses on Juliusz Słowacki’s rediscovered notebook of the journey to the East (1836–37)and presents the research of the team of scholars who are preparing a new edition of Słowacki’s notebook. The research on Juliusz Słowacki’s travel notebook and the historical contexts of his travels to Greece and to the East is of fundamental significance to the knowledge of Juliusz Słowacki’s works and may be the basis for a wider research on the Polish reception of Greek and Middle East culture. The research allows to verify former hypotheses concerning the mature works of the author of Voyage to the Holy Land from Naples (new deciphering of all the poems from the notebook may be suggested), whereas a description of Słowacki’s journey to the East on the basis of new sources and in new contexts may shed new light on essential issues concerning not only Polish travels to Greece and Middle East as a phenomenon of the 19th century Polish culture, but also on important questions of Polish emigrants’ Eastern policy. The manuscript poses a challenge to fundamental editorial research. We are planning to use a modern, European textological knowledge of fragmentary works and to use innovative digital solutions.
